Cant hear a thing on my IPOD Shuffle?

I purchased a IPOD Shuttle a week ago at Best Buy....I charged it a lot of times and loaded it with my songs from my files on my putter. When its connected to my computer it plays all songs...but when I disconnect it and plug in my headphones I can not heard a thing...Tried to put all the volume up and nothing...Can somebody help me?...Can I just put my MP3s from my computer in without having to go thru ITunes?....I keep on charging it and the orange light keeps on blinking every 2 seconds...like if its charging...but after a full day connected to my on computer still keeps on charging...and charging...and then when I plug my earphones...no song gets to play at all...What have I done wrong? How can this be fixed? Have tried the manufacturer's website. I dont want to go thru ITunes because they require me to put on my credit card numbers. Is needed to have a ITunes account to have the thing work properly? Or maybe I got a bad or refurbished product?
